*Volunteer: Langur-livestock interactions in the high altitude meadow of
the western Himalayas, India.*
*Position Description*: We are seeking a volunteer for a long-term study on
Central Himalayan Langur at the *Rudranath* Meadow (Kedarnath Wildlife
Sanctuary), Uttarakhand, India. This project is collaborative project with
two well-known primatologists Prof. *Anindya Sinha* (National Institute of
Advance Studies, IISc Bengaluru) and Prof. *Michele A Huffman* (Primate
Research Institute, Kyoto University Japan). This position starts in June
2016. In continuation of my previous study of langur-human interface (see
http://www.rufford.org/projects/himani_nautiyal); this project will focus
on the behavioral ecology of the unstudied higher altitude meadow langurs
and their interactions with seasonally grazing goats and sheep. Volunteer
will be responsible for (a) Learning individual identities, (b) Collecting
group scan data, (c) Collecting fecal samples to analyse parasite load (d)
Vegetation sampling, and (e) Taking GPS data on range use. The fieldwork
for this project involves long hours of following monkeys in the high
altitude of the Himalayas on daily basis.
*Study Site:* Rudranath is a famous pilgrimage and trekking place. Lots of
information about the area is available online. Its breath-taking
landscapes and beautiful meadows famous for its valley filled with
flowering medicinal plants. It also holds good diversity of high altitude
mammals and birds. Field site is located in altitude ranging between 3,500-
4500 meter.
*Living conditions*: Very basic living conditions with tent accommodation
only. The field site is located about 25 km from road with very few people
live nearby (Herders and few shops for tourists). Electricity source is
only solar power with limited water source. Very basic food depends on the
supply. Network connectivity is available in few places just for the call
(only Vodafone and idea).
*Qualifications/Experience*:
- Must have completed a Bachelor’s degree, preferably in biology,
anthropology, or related field.
- Must have some field experience, preferably in the Himalayas.
- Experience with data collection and data entry, preferably with
a behavioral research project.
- Must be able to live and work independently and as part of a
multicultural team.
- Good physical fitness is essential as most of the day will be
spent hiking after the study groups.
- Due to remoteness of the field site and the lack of communication
infrastructure, volunteers must also be of sound physical and mental health
without any pre-existing conditions that might require immediate medical
attention.
*Support provided for volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging)*: Local
travel and food at the field site will be covered by the project. It will
cover travel expenses on a reimbursement basis (only train and Bus travel).
*Term of Appointment*: approximately June 2016 - October 2016 (two months
commitment necessary for payment of travel fare).
