I can only add from my personal perspective that the topic is highly interesting, as we already suggested in 2011 in a paper in GCB ;-). Best wishes to all, Christian -------- Original-Nachricht -------- Betreff: announced of a PhD-stipend at CMEC and Centre for Ice and Climate Datum: Mon, 13 Jan 2014 08:52:22 +0100 Von: Carsten Rahbek <CRahbek@xxxxxxxxx> <CRahbek@xxxxxxxxx> An: Christian Hof <Christian.Hof@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx><Christian.Hof@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Hi Christian Here is an announcement of a PhD-thesis, which you might find of personal interest in terms of what is now going on on some of the stuff you worked with here. Obviously, I hope for your excellent service of spreading the word J Carsten *******e-mail to the center e-mail list***** Dear all We have announced a fully funded PhD scholarship on biodiversity response to climate change jointly at Centre for Ice and Climate (Niels Bohr Institute), and Center for Macroecology, Evolution and Climate (Natural History Museum of Denmark), University of Copenhagen, Denmark. *Application deadline is January 31st, 2014.* The pdf of the full announcement text is attached (for wider circulation) *The project:* The findings from ice cores and other palaeoclimate records show that climatic changes during the transition from the glacial period to the present interglacial were very abrupt. This challenges the current biological models on how species and populations have reacted to climate change. The project is in the interface between palaeoclimate research, marcoecology and evolution with the objective to combine climate data, climate model results, and macroecological models to reconstruct biodiversity change over time. We aim to combine models developed to study population genetics with species distribution models, allowing us to evaluate the robustness of the large scale models when natural adaptations that track environmental change are included. The project is highly interdisciplinary and applicants with a background in biology, physics, mathematics or geosciences will be considered. We seek international competitive candidates with a very strong publication record at the level of position interested in. We expect documented strong analytical and data handling skills and the ability to communicate within a cross-disciplinary research center. Competitive salaries are offered. A few years back, we at CMEC published a (very well cited) paper making biologists aware of the recent advancement in geophysical research (from the Ice and Climate center) that documents that abrupt climate change are much more pronounced than what we normally assume as biologists in our model. The paper outline and discusses some of the challenges this pose for current biodiversity climate change models, which assumes slower gradual changes in climate: Hof, C., Levinsky, I., Araujo, M.B. and Rahbek, C. (2011). /Rethinking species' ability to cope with rapid climate change. /*Global Change Biology* 17: 2987-2990 http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1365-2486.2011.02418.x/full The joint PhD-thesis is to focus on this topic in an interdisciplinary collaboration with the geophysicists at the Centre for Ice and Climate. Please circulate this announcement widely – there are no a priori internal candidates at either centers. Strong modelling skills are an absolute must.
