workedQualificationsEDUCATION: 
•Undergraduate degree in the humanities or social sciences required. 
•An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be 
considered
EXPERIENCE: 
•Minimum of two years directly-related experience as an acquisition editor is 
required. 
•Knowledge of the key areas in which the Press publishes (Native studies, 
Native history, Canadian history) would be preferred.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 
•Good writing skills is essential. 
•Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills that will 
enable the editor to work well with authors and colleagues is required. 
•Ability to pay close attention to detail is required. 
•Ability to work independently as well as a member of a team is required.
 
Key Responsibilities•Researches, assesses work of potential authors, contacts 
potential new authors, encourages, and advises on each stage of assessment and 
editorial process to submit manuscripts to the press. 
•Works with authors to prepare their book manuscripts for peer review, helps 
them revise manuscripts in response to peer reviews. 
•Encourages, negotiates, and works with scholars worldwide, but particularly in 
Canada, to turn their work into publishable book form. 
•Finds appropriate peer reviewers for manuscripts, co-ordinates confidential 
peer assessments, and prepares reports on new manuscripts for U of M Press 
editorial board. 
•Participants in editorial fields in which the press publishes, has general 
familiarity with major trends, works in these fields by regularly surveying new 
books, journal articles, book reviews, and presentations at conferences. 
•Represents U of M Press at annual events, conferences such as Congress of 
Social Sciences and Humanities, as well as at other conferences, visits 
campuses, and meet scholars when possible.   
•Applies for funding when necessary, and considers other new editorial areas 
that may be appropriate for U of M Press to pursue. 
•Performs other related duties as required or as assigned.Position Number17486#
