19 May 2011, MATA roundtable discussion on IPv6 summary:

Current status:

Pacific Rim and Asia now mandated to use IPv6 standard

Europe, Africa and South America quickly adopting by necessity

Most of North America fails to see the need to adopt/migrate

All Linux, Apple and MS operating systems since XP SP2 are IPv6 compliant

CISCO and Juniper devices have conversion applications available

June 6 is World IPv6 Day. Facebook, and other major internet players, will
turn on IPv6 access, good opportunity to test your IPv6
settings/compatibility. Google has been both v4 and v6 for over 6 months
(see the non-english character URLs?)

Changes in IPv6

IP address format changes:

Hex format

64-bit address vs 32-bit address (many more addresses available)

TCP header format change

Some header blocks removed from IPv4 format

New header blocks in IPv6 format allow for more descriptive information and
less 'overhead'

What do we keep

Ability to NAT, no need to buy an IP address for every device (did you hear
the sigh of relief?)

Ability to DHCP

Positive changes in IPv6

Allows for native language use. No longer limited to ASCII characters. Now
allows for URL's in Russian, Farsi, Chinese, etc.. Who's site will a
customer go to? One in their own language or try to translate to yours?

Reduced overhead allows for faster transmission/routing

SIP sessions (video conference/IP phone) smoother and faster.

Challenges for migration

Will your current devices reject IPv6 packets? Will IPv6 devices reject IPv4
packets?

Need a software upgrade or full hardware replacement?

Migrate current IPv4 addresses to IPv6 incrementally?

Are third party monitoring/administrative programs/applications capable of
working with both standards and technologies during and after transition?

Security applications compatible to IPv6 TCP format?
