In my experience of downloading from the Mac App store, one doesn't get an indication that the application is downloading; the fact that the app free button is greyed out is usually an indication it's been bought. Try looking in your Applications folder and see if it has indeed downloaded. The first time I downloaded an app this concerned me a great deal until I looked and found it right in Applications.
