Hmmm, okay! This is a very good tip, and I thank you. I wonder why I can’t get
it to come to the foreground when I Command-Tab around? Somewhat misleading,
that. But thanks. Got any light to shed on the other two oddities? :)

Mark,
The dinging sound you hear is just VO letting you know that the force quit
applications system dialog is open. You can use the application or window
chooser menus to set focus back to that window and close it. In other words,
the force quit applications window does not close on its own after you force
quit an application.
Hope that helps,

Mark, the noise you describe sounds similar to one I sometimes get in
Youtube, when this happens I press 'control' and it stops with no further
issue, except sometimes Youtube pauses and continues after pressing the
spacebar.
I don't use spellcheck so can't help there.

Hi, list.
When working with Pages today, and trying to open the spell checker with
Command Shift semicolon, Pages immediately froze and would not respond.
This has happened the last few times I tried to spell-check, actually. I
force-quit the application. Immediately, the dinging noise I wrote about a
few weeks back commenced. It did not stop until I shut down the MacBook Air
completely.
When I restarted it, VoiceOver came up after the boot-up, but I was unable
to enter my password until I shut VoiceOver off and restarted it. Only then
was I placed in the authentication window. This is very weird. I should say
here that I am running the very latest Monterey Mac OS.
So, I’ve solved one mystery, that of the annoying dinging noise, and gained
two: What the heck is wrong with SpellChecker in Pages, and what the heck
is going on at start-up with that annoying popcorn sound my typing makes
until I restart VoiceOver?
I’m amused and annoyed. But mostly amused.
Thoughts?
