Hi Mark, did you try and re-start your mac to see if that would bring your sounds back? I had written another message about an odd sound in mail, and as it turned out, when I got my mac back from repair, I accidently changed the alert sound from funk to hero, so went in to system preferences, and changed it back to funk, but it is easy to forget how things behave if something has changed from what they were before.

The "funk," sound which plays when you hit the top or bottom of a list, and the Twitter sounds are gone, as well as some of the Ichat noises. Adium, however, still makes its noises and so does Skype.
