I just recently got an IPhone 3gs to replace a Nokia N75 phone. Nothing cingular offered for the N75 was totally accessible with talks 3.54 though some aps were partially accessible. Now all I have to do is figure out where I put that sd card reader and put the n75 sd card in the reader and see if the IPhone will find my contacts on that card and either let me know it found them and allow me to import them or import those for me automatically. One feature I did not like about this transition was that I couldn't save any of my feeds to the SD card but I think I'll be able to find them on the IPhone and add them. Unless that copy memory to smart card command also saved those feeds, I'll find out later this weekend. On Wed, 10 Jun 2009, Chris Hofstader wrote:

If one uses AT&T, they can purchase a Blackjack , a pretty cool Windows based phone plus a screen reader from Code factory for under $200 so, like many other areas, the Apple solution is a bit more expensive than a Windows set up.

The price argument, though, isn't exactly fair. AT&T calling plans cost exactly the same whether you use Windows, Symbian and, soon, an iPhone. Meanwhile, the iPhone has many, many more features built-in right out of the box. Plus, even though it has only been around a shorter time, there is a lot of free (as in freedom with a lower case "f" rather as in free beer,) open source and shareware programs for the iPhone and, assuming the program's authors used mostly standard controls (much more likely on the small screen as the standard ones scale far better than custom controls that one might use to look really cool on a desktop outfit.

So, stuff you have to pay for (like a screen reader) is already in a Macintosh.

Built-in programs include a really cool (according to things Apple has published) universal remote control. People who have read Blind Confidential over the years or followed the work done by the V2 standards committee of which I was a member for a pretty long time, you can easily see just how excited I can get about a highly accessible way to control a whole lot of devices that we blinks either had to guess at, remember a lot or get assistance from a sightie nearby. This is, for people with vision impairment, a tectonic shift in what we can actually expect in future devices designed for the masses but done so in a universal manner so everybody can enjoy using it.

The list of other very, very coool things that come with the mainstream Apple phone and, if even half of the marketing babble is true, this is years ahead of the others and, following Apple's behavior lately, it will continue to lead for a long time.

So, I toast Apple with the fresh grapefruit juice I made from fruit I picked about a half hour ago!

If anyone wants to see just how far I've moved on my opinion need only read the Blind Confidential posts that mention Apple going back three years or so.

Happy Hacking,

I've had the cost argument three times already today. I don't think it cost any more than a phone plus screenreading software but it seems as though all my windows using friends just hear the word Iphone and think I am saying Expensive. The ears just shut down at that point and they don't even hear the reasons why it may be less expensive to get an Iphone.
