Working with Effects in GarageBand with Voiceover

If you have not downloaded GarageBand Quick Guide for Leopard with Voiceover basic use or GarageBand Keyboard Shortcuts please do so. These guides will help you to learn GarageBand with Voiceover. You can find them at: www.icanworkthisthing.com under Mac with Voiceover or at: www.lioncourt.com

Using Effects.

To get to the effects list, press VO keys spacebar on the arrow, just to the left of details. This will take you into a list of effects. Many effects from noise gate, equalization, echo and reverb and the list goes on

The one we will talk about here is echo since it is the one that is the most easily noticeable. First of all, make sure the box that allows echo is checked with VO keys spacebar then VO keys right arrow until you come to a horizontal slider which, by default, should be at zero. Interact with this slider to adjust the amount of echo you would like. After you have done this and given your track a try you may decide that the length of the echo is too long or the number of echoes are too many. Here's how to adjust them: first of all, use VO keys-home to get to the top of the track window. Now with VO keys- right arrow continue to right arrow until you get to two buttons. In this case, I am using a real instrument track, so the first button will say real instrument which is the one currently selected. VO once to the right, to the master track button and select it with VO keys spacebar. With this button selected, you can make a number of changes like tempo, time signature and key.

Continue past these with VO Keys-right arrow until you come to effects, which you have enabled. VO Keys-right arrow until you come to thee edit button and select this button with VO keys-spacebar.

You will find that you can make a number of changes with sliders, by interacting with them.

When you have made your changes, you can exit that menu with escape. Then go back to the left with VO Keys-left arrow and VO keys-spacebar on the real instrument button, as I said earlier, I am working in a real instrument track.

Not all effects windows are created equal, take for instance, the EQ or equalizer window, known as Visual EQ..

Check the box that says, Visual EQ, with VO keys-spacebar. Next to this check box is a button, which in its default state will say: manual pop up button. This buttons name will change with your new setting. You may find an edit button just to the right of this button, pressing, VO keys-spacebar on either should drop down a menu. You can now arrow through a number of preset EQ choices. Your ear will help you to make the right choice. When you have made your choice, you can leave this menu with escape.
