I don't use 'Notes' myself, however, you can open an rtf file in notes.
Under the file menu you will see the option to 'open with' and a list of apps
to select that should open the relevant file, this applies to all file types.

Thank you very much for your answer. So if I choose rich text format can I
save it to my Notes app?

Hi Zoe, when you open an Application it will now be available in the Doc
and under doc options you can select to have it always available in doc.
Rich text format is good and simple
When first saving it should ask where you want it to be saved and it will
continue to be saved in that location.
You will also want to name the document, by default it is named 'untitled',
if you press return when on a document you can now name it , press return
again and the new name stays.

Hi Patrick and Keith thank you very much for your help.
Text edit was not in the doc for me. I did find it in my applications
folder. Again Google can sometimes be your best friend. I found the command
to move text edit into my dock. If I want my documents to be viewed on my
iPhone as well in that case should I be saving in rich text format?. Also
when I save these documents whether in plain text or rich text will it ask
me where I want to save them?

), Hello Zoe:
Welcome to the family.
It sounds like you are making fantastic progress with your new mac. much
success.
And, you live in a great city.
On your mac, you should have a program called text edit. if you open it
you will be presented with a ruler and an edit field, similar to the way
many word processors look.
In the menu bar, which you mentioned that you can navigate with ease :),
navigate to the edit option … arrow down and you will hear make plain text
… shift - command - T. press that and presto.
That command is a toggle so if you press it again, it will revert to rich
text format which is the text edit default.
Once it is set to plain text, save it and presto … you have done it.
I hope this information proves useful … please let us know and while
writing this I message came in from Keith addressing your question as
well. you are in good hands here :).
Take good care and I wish you enough.

Hello everybody, hope you are well, my name is zoe I am 49 years old,
married without children, and I live in Toronto Ontario Canada. I am a
newbie to the Mac and have 1000 questions. I do use Google to try to find
answers. I belong to a few mailing lists for the Mac and when one of my
question is answered I do save the email answer for future reference.
Coming from windows things on the Mac seem a lot more complicated.
I understand how to navigate my menus, my dock, my desktop. I understand
how to expand and collapse disclosure triangles. I still have a lot to
learn. I hope some of you can help. Here is my first question.
On the Mac is it possible to create a plain text document, anywhere or do
I have to be in the notes app? Coming from windows one of the things I
enjoyed very much was that I was able to create a new note anywhere on my
computer. In any folder, on the desktop etc. I like creating notes for
recipes, other important information, or even just things to remember. I
want to learn the Mac and I hope this can be done on the Mac if not do
you have any other suggestions?
Regards zoe
