720p is pretty standard for Youtube videos. 14 Gb for 1.5 hours is indeed
pretty high, I’ll check some of mine and let you know what they come out to.
For most Youtube content going above 720 isn’t going to make that much of a
difference.
You can use IMovie itself to convert a video, works best if you are
downgrading the resolution, as you can’t really increase the resolution. You
can save in a higher resolution, it just doesn’t do all that much for the
picture. You can import your movie like any other clip, add it to your
project timeline, then follow your process for sharing to file, then select
the lower resolution.
I also dont’ know what happens in IMovie when it comes to frame rate. That
number is expressed as FPS, frames per second. It’s pretty normal to have
your IPhone set to 60 FPS, if IMovie preserves this, then that can add to
your file size. Again, this may not matter depending on what Youtube is doing
with the file, like there is no reason to save at 180p 60 FPS if Youtube is
just going to convert your video to 720p 30 FPS.
To answer a question I think you were asking, the numbers are screen
resolution, you will likely read numbers like 720p, 1080p, 2160p etc. If you
are viewing a vidoe on a divice with a lower screen resolution, it uses
software to present the picture appropriately. This is a real simplification,
and I’m really just going on what I’ve read in support docs and hearing from
sighted folks, but everything I’ve found says it’s normal for Youtube to
stream in 720p, so there is no point to saving it in a higher resolution.
I’ll do a little poking around and let you know if I find anything
interesting.

Hi john iMovie is saving them with that extension MP4, so I don’t see how I
can convert them any further. Having said that when I save the files I am
being asked for high-quality low quality at Cetera when I choose low-quality
it gives me the lowest gigabyte range however there is another section with
numbers that I don’t understand and I don’t know if it’ll affect the picture
for sighted people and I think the lowest number is in the 200s

Also, you could convert them to mp4, and upload that to youtube. The
size would be much smaller.

No, I don't think either of them are in the app store. Just search for
them on Google and you will find them easily. As for the quality of the
video it depends on how you set it, so you may want to ask a sighted
person to have a look at your video before you upload it.

I’m assuming handbrake and VLC can be download it from the App Store?
Will the video after this conversion still be acceptable viewing quality
for sighted people?

You could use something like Handbrake to convert the video to H.264
before uploading to Youtube. Keep in mind Vlc needs to be installed for
Handbrake to work.

Hello everybody as always I hope you are all doing well.
Thanks to all of you and especially Ian my YouTube channel is up and
running. Using Ian’s instructions I have been able to successfully join
my Clips etc. The problem I am having is the following.
I am using my iPhone to tape my cooking episodes, I am transferring the
video files from my iMovie app on my iPhone to the Mac, when I save the
iMovie files on the Mac the gigabyte count is really high. For example
a one and a half hour video is something approximately like 14 GB. This
means I’m having a real hard time uploading these videos to YouTube, to
a cloud-based service, etc. What settings should I change so that my
videos have a lower gigabyte count?
As always thank you for any help in advance.
