A couple of things.
There appears to be a bug in the "mouse pointer follows VoiceOver cursor "
setting which may have some contribution to this issue but not all.
If one turns "screen curtain on", the setting under visuals in VO utilities
that displays the visual voiceover cursor is disabled. for some reason this
also disables the sync mouse pointer to VO cursor, which now also is disabled
and needs to be reenabled.
The only way that one can truly reenable this is by turning on the visual
cursor again. However, that being said, my experience is that one can only
edit emails with the email editor reliably via Voiceover, by making sure that
"quicknav" is off and then staying totally away from the VO cursor and only
using the arrow keys to cursor around the text.
Mail appears to be using a HTML based method for editing and it appears that
interactions with this method are not fully implemented in VoiceOver.
I am not sure if someone at Apple has decided that it isn't necessary to
integrate this element with VO, or whether it is an oversight.
In other words, the mail editor now works in the same manner as an editor on an
IOS device in that one needs to use just the arrow keys, not the VO cursor keys.
One point about this: It is possible to travel word by word with the left and
right arrow keys if one holds down the option key and totally stays away from
the VO cursor keys.
The real problem is consistency. All other text editing elements are set up to
work with the VO cursor. The mail editor and HTML forms are not set up in this
manner.
In viewing this visually I am informed that the VO cursor does not follow the
typing in mail either.

same. I am assuming the voice over cursor and the mac cursor are not
synchronizing.
Since my spinal neck surgery last October 12th, my hands have been slowing
rebuilding in strength. They won’t ever get back to 100 percent but they are
probably 80 or 85 percent of normal now. I often, for a few weeks during
recovery, when I tried to type, due to the weakness in my hands, I would
press too hard and the key would bounce and I would get a double letter. As
I said, strength has slowly but surely been returning to my hands and I don’t
seem to double letters so much any longer. My Mac DAS keyboard is much
easier to type on than my older DAS keyboards, so that helps. I used to run
about 70 to 75 WPM typing and when I was a teenager, I could type 100 Words
per minute on an old office IBM manual typewriter at the school for the
blind. Now 40 WPM is about my limit after 6 spinal surgeries but back to
another example.
I was typing, a few weeks ago, an email on my mac and when I typed the word
was, I discovered, when proofreading, I bounced the s key and it now was wass
and voice over pronounced it funny so I checked the spelling. Sure enough, I
had typed wass. So, again, I backspaced over it but upon reading it, it had
not changed. Likewise, I used the del key but that did not work either. I
was hoping this recent update to High Sierra would have fixed my email editor
but it is the same. I have been typing my emails using textedit on the mac,
copying it over to my email message, and pasting the whole text into the
window. Textedit works just like it always does with none of the problems
the email editor has. So, does anyone have any ideas of what I could check.
I don’t root around in the menus all that often and I discovered this problem
first thing after installing High Sierra when it first was made available.
