Sorry. I should have noted I am running Yosemite on a MAC. I don’t know if I
activated an unintentional combination of keys or what. I found that after the
system went into sleep mode and I woke it up, the issue was gone.

characters not words. It has happened in MAIL and textedit. I have no idea
