Two Tenure-Track Positions: in Modern Philosophy,
and in Epistemology and Metaphysics


The Department of Philosophy at San Francisco State University invites 
applications for two tenure-track positions, one in Modern Philosophy, 
and one in Epistemology and Metaphysics, at assistant or associate 
professor level, effective Fall 2005.

Qualifications and Duties:
Ph.D. in Philosophy. One position requires an Area of Specialization in 
Modern Philosophy (Descartes through Kant), and one position requires an 
Area of Specialization in Epistemology and Metaphysics. Other Areas of 
Specialization or Competence are open, but we have special interest in 
Feminist Philosophy, Logic, Philosophy of Language, Philosophy of Mind, 
Philosophy of Religion, and/or Philosophy of Science.  We welcome 
candidates for the Epistemology and Metaphysics position who also can 
teach courses in Modern Philosophy, and candidates for the Modern 
Philosophy position who also can teach Epistemology and Metaphysics.

The Department of Philosophy offers courses for undergraduate majors, 
general education courses, and graduate courses for the M.A. program in 
philosophy. Candidates should be able to teach critical thinking. Duties 
include scholarly research with publication.  The successful candidates 
will assume important roles in supervising master's theses/projects, 
advising, committee service, or curricular development. The University 
provides opportunities for support of both research and teaching projects.

Rank and Salary: Appointment will be at the rank of assistant or 
associate professor. Salary competitive, commensurate with 
qualifications. San Francisco State University, as part of the

The Department of Philosophy at SFSU has a rich array of offerings, 
including many courses that are cross-listed with other departments. The 
Department awards two B.A. degrees (in Philosophy and in Philosophy and 
Religion) and the M.A. degree (in Philosophy); minors in Philosophy, 
Philosophy and Religion, and Religious Studies; and a Certificate in
