On 3 October last year, the distinguished British-born
historian Tony Judt was preparing for a public lecture
when the telephone rang. He was due to give the talk,
entitled 'The Israel Lobby and US Foreign Policy', at
the Polish consulate in New York in less than an hour.
The caterers were already there. But when he picked up
the phone he was informed that his lecture had been
suddenly cancelled.
