Lawrence: Reuel Marc Gerecht, a former Middle East
CIA specialist, considers the various options from
a more informed standpoint than most of us have.
It's good to read Gerecht's piece. His long
experience of Iran, particularly of its nuclear
potential and geopolitical aims, makes him well
worth heeding. I remember watching Gerecht and
several other specialists discussing the Iranian
problem on C-Span in 2002.
Essentially what Gerecht predicted in 2002 came to
pass. Iran seized the opportunity of a distracted
US to start to nuke up, the Iranians ignored the
IAEA warnings and threatened counterattacks, the
Iranians began to show off their new missile
technology, the European-3 engaged them in direct
and fruitless diplomacy, and the US is pushed
closer to having the "Great Iran Debate."
