It's not unknown in the UK, it's just that in the US there's more room to be isolated, more opportunity to live your own life. I don't see much wrong with that, providing they don't impinge on others. Selfish, yes, but happy for the most part.

There's something to be said for the condition.

People in Time Tunnels tend to be sad, seen from the outside. Maybe it's more of an American condition, although I bet it's not unknown in the UK.

Sad maybe because they haven't listened to Wild Bill:
