The Bush White House argued that because of 9.11, they needed to be able to carry out surveillance without search warrants.

It turns out this is a lie. The NSA had been doing this before 9.11.

Qwest refused to cooperate in illegal spying. The government retaliated by withdrawing a $100m contract.

The White House said they needed spying in order to "protect" us, but they were already spying and that didn't prevent 9.11.
