Okay, let's sum up the week:

- Tom Delay, Republican speaker of the House, quits Congress "to spend more time with his lawyers" and prepare for his upcoming trial and conviction on the most massive corruption charges Washington has ever seen.

- The Republicans in Congress were unable to resolve the budget, so they just gave up and went on a two-week Easter vacation.

- The Republican-controlled Senate is incapable of passing an immigration bill, either for or against, due to the war between the factions

- Libby, to protect himself, says that it was Bush who approved the Plame leaks.

- Bush defends himself by saying he originally declassified the information, so it wasn't really a leak, but the facts don't support this "story".

- Seymour Hersh writes in the New Yorker that the White House is rapidly preparing for a nuclear attack on Iran.

This is a single week in Republican-controlled Washington. But can one really say "Republican-controlled"? It's one staggering disaster after the other.

Forget bin Laden, al Qaeda, Afghanistan, Iraq, Katrina, global warming. Those are external issues. The GOP itself is falling apart before our eyes, and all of it, every single bit of it, is self-inflicted.

What's next? Can this get worse? The GOP is shattered and they are heading into the mid-term elections, with their leadership either under investigation, under indictment, or in jail. Abramoff, the leading GOP lobbyist and the principle part of Delay's control of Congress, got 6 years in prison last week for massive corruption.

Their best move is to start another war. Whip up patriotism in the press and the public and dismiss critics as traitors in time of war.

Nevermind that the CIA concludes that Iran is ten years away from building a
bomb.

yrs,
andreas
