  >>get your flu shots

Flu shots?

How about gigantic waiting lines, queues of truly Soviet
proportion...for cipro?

I spoke to someone who should know, and they told me--to my slack-jawed
amazement--what the CDC's health "plan" was for New York City, should it
be subject to a mass anthrax attack. (This was about the time of the RNC
here.)

If there were a mass exposure, people would be told to report, next day,
to their primary care physician, who would give them a prescription for
Cipro. They would then calmly walk to their pharmacy, present the
prescription, and wait for it to be filled.

Pure chaos, right?

If 50,000 people were exposed, another 100,000 were worried that they
were exposed, and these people all tried to get a next-day appointment
with their "primary care physician," believing it could be a matter of
life and death . . . and these people then besieged pharmacies all over
the five boroughs, still believing it was a matter of life and death .
. . well you do the math.

Perhaps the resulting chaos would underscore the inadequacy of our
current health care system in dealing with biological terror attacks.
Perhaps it would cause the government to get a little more involved in
public health.

Of course the current President would never back such a move, even if
Manhattan burned for days after the "Cipro Riots." This is a blue state
after all.
