A flattering prediction but alas...wish I was in Orkney, especially now it's
safer after Christopher Lee died.
In fact, David touches on a sore point: I'm supposed to be going to Scotland to
eat two expensive dinners for two that my family gifted me, as vouchers, for my
last birthday. The first dinner voucher runs out end of August, and I'm no
closer to the food than I was when I received the gift. (Lest anyone deduce I
am foodie from this consider the alternative that I'm just difficult to buy
for, unless it's an Amazon voucher - which was ruled out (but not by me) as I'd
turned 50, and my family want to coerce a visit north of the border, largely to
defy their local police advice). One of these dinners is up near Aberdeen which
is further north than I have ever been (and I consider myself a Northerner); a
voucher to Aberdeen Steak House, redeemable in London, would've saved cascades
of logistical guano. But, as you all know, no one listens to me.
For David, I recommend the Dylan song "Highlands", where we learn Dylan knows
Erica Jong and other fine things.

British police still appear fit and quick, but yes many wear flak jackets and
near likely targets they hold assault rifles at the ready. When the fire alarm
went off in the building that housed our conference, visitors to London bunched
up in a crowd outside. Having grown up in an era when setting off an alarm
might be an attempt to create a large target, I steered my friend further down
the street. We waited beside a sturdy wall.
Also, your comment that it is hot in London deserves a bit of argument from
Southern California. I read that the London high yesterday was 79 degrees.
The low here in San Jacinto last night was 76 degrees. The high yesterday was
111 degrees and the day before 115, and etc. Maybe we'll be lucky today and
the temp will drop to 105. I don't think it will go below 100.
Here all is measured in Celsius...and humidity...of which there is a lot.
Ninety degrees in Portland is o.k. Not so on a London commuter train. Donal
will have been sensible and hied himself off to the Atlantic coastline
somewhere.
I'm looking forward to Orkney.
David.
