Well, it's not Grice's, but surely a philosophy don at St. John's, Oxford,
beats The NYT. From today's Design supplement:
i. More is more.
As McEvoy states (in his "Imaginary conversations"),
ii. Less is more.
is, for Popper, easily refuted (or falsified, as his jargon goes). OTOH,
i. More is more.
does not show or say anything, as Witters shews, alla Grice's
iii. War is war.
or
iv. Women are women.
But I beg to differ with McEvoy: the utterances are not offensive (to use a
derivative of his "offends Grice's conversational maxims"). On the contrary,
they implicate, or DISimplicate, as the case might be (which isn't).
