I just had a brilliant experience registering for the GRE. Frankly, I don't know who handles these calls, but the individual I spoke to did not understand why I do not have a state, social security number, or a zip code. Even after I explained that I was registering for the test in Toronto, Canada, and also required a Toronto based test center. Representative: You don't have a state? Erin: No, I live in Canada Representative: And so you don't live in a state? Erin: No, I live in a province. You need to select Canada and it will give you a list of the provinces. You need to select Canada first. Then a province. Representative: Oh, I see. OK. And the province is...? Erin: Ontario. Representative: OK, and your social security number, please. Erin: I don't have a social security number. I have a social insurance number. Representative: You don't have a social security number? Erin: No. In Canada there are no social security numbers, only social insurance numbers. Representative: Oh, right. OK. I see the field for that. Great. Erin: Yeah, great. Representative: OK, and your zip code? Erin: I don't have a zip code, I have a postal code. Representative: Postal code then? Erin: L4J 6 Zed 3 Representative: 6...what? Erin: Zed. Representative: What? Erin: ZEE!! ZEE FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!!! Representative: Zee as in zebra? Erin: Yes, for the love of God, zee as in zebra. Representative: OK, all the test dates for the week you selected are at 9am Erin: 9am. You're joking, right? Representative: No. They're all at 9am. Erin: Fine, schedule me for the Friday, August 26th at 9am. ..... trails off....
