According to the OED, 'encyclopaedia' (or in Greek, ) is "an erroneous form (a false reading) occurring in MSS. of Quintilian (Loeb, Institutio Oratoria) Pliny (Loeb, Historia Naturalis) and Galen (Loeb, Phusikon Dunameon) "for ‘encyclical education’, the "circle" of the seven liberal arts (and sciences) -- the trivium and quadrivium -- tekhnai -- considered by the Greeks as essential to a liberal education (cf. 'encyclical' A. 1). So, I suppose it _is_ the strict Grecian equivalent for a 'round up' (egkuklos') 'education', or 'puerilitas', as the strict Roman for 'paideia' should be. In American English, 'paideia' and 'puerilitas' comes out as 'kiddities'. Or was it a Brit who first thought of calling the bairn a 'kid'?
