Foxtail season is over and because Duffy has gained a bit of weight (he now weighs 19 pounds), Susan decided it would be okay if Duffy went on half of our River hikes. Why not all of them? Because he will be grounded when foxtail season resumes and she wants to get him used to staying home some of the time so it won't be such a shock when he has to stay home all of the time. He is her dog so I only argued a little bit. J The photos of today's outing are in the November 2011 gallery: http://lawrencehelm.smugmug.com/ If it were my old German Shorthaired Pointer, Heidi, she would have gone berserk with excitement if she were in Duffy's place, but he was calm the entire time, as if it were no big deal to be going back to the river after months of having to stay home. When I opened the doors of the Jeep, he hopped out as he always did and went sniffing about as he and the girls always do. He exhibited no unusual excitement. If anything he was less excited than he used to be. The only difference I saw was that he remembered other hikes when we went in different directions. I could see him looking toward them, but when I said, "Duffy we're going this way and pointed with my hiking stick, he got back on course with no argument." The girls will always argue a bit, that is, going a little ways in some other direction and then when I continue on, running to catch up, but not Duffy. A couple of times I looked about and didn't see him; so I said, "Where are you Duffy? I don't see you," and he would pop out from behind a bush to show me where he was, just as the girls do. I've been slowly posting some older photos. The last time Duffy was going with us regularly seems to have been March 2010, at least the March 2010 gallery is full of Duffy photos. Lawrence
