Ah, yes, reminds me of a passage in his autobiography Tristes  
Tropiques, where Claude Levi-Strauss contrasts two types of students  
encountered in French Universities when he was a student, in the  
1930s, as I recall.  There were, on the one hand, the hearty  
sportsmen and bon vivants, eager to graduate and get on with their  
careers and, on the other hand, the monkish introverts whose highest  
ambition was never to have to leave school.
