In graduate school, I had a friend who studied philosophy in Heidelberg
for a year; he sent periodic letters. At first, they made relatively
good sense in English, but gradually his verbs kept "slipping." By the
end of the year, I could hardly understand his English; all his English
verbs were huddled up at the end of all his English sentences just like
good respectable German verbs would do.
