Bawer's analysis seems a bit behind the curve as far as the US goes.
It may be official policy to encourage integration, but the US is not
immune to one of the major consequences of globalization,
transnational diasporas in which ease of communication and travel back
and forth from the home country offset forces encouraging integration.
Worldwide the possibility of living and working somewhere else while
remaining in touch with home is becoming easier. I am one example.
