An outdoor Kerry rally in a downtown riverside park in Portland, earlier today, drew 50,000 souls, official estimate. Beautiful, warm afternoon. Crowd was the largest since the convention (according to the news; I have no idea how large the convention crowd was). Everybody welcome, but bags, etc. were inspected. Bush was here at the same time, a deliberate ploy by his campaign managers. No public appearance, just an invitation only event at a suburban high school. (Not sure how a public school can be used that way.) Bush was here once before this year, but came nowhere near the city. He held a fundraiser at a hotel near the airport, met only Republican donors. (The media count this as Bush's visiting Portland.) Bush I used to refer to Portland as 'Little Beirut' because of the protests he attracted here when he was in office.
