(Hopefully this version of my posting wil get past the gremlins!) Paul Celan's 'Todesfuge' is arguably the best-known poem in the German language. A few comments from "DEATHFUGUE: Intruding on Paul Celan", by Gail Holst-Warhaft http://www.celan-projekt.de/materialien-felstiner.html "Celan's own reading of the poem, preserved on record, emphasized its relentless rhythm, an effect achieved by repetition, alliteration, and a dance-like beat that reinforces the grotesque musical imagery of a poem originally published in Romanian and called "Tango of Death." The title recalls the Jewish musicians forced to perform by the S.S. ... At Auschwitz, the term "Death Tango" was used for whatever music was played when groups of prisoners were executed. Without the lilt of this macabre dance music, the poem loses much of its effect." I am led to understand that at the following site one can hear this poem read by Celan. I have not tried it (I have two cassettes of recordings of Celan reading). Perhaps some other list member(s) can report. http://us.share.geocities.com/paul_ancel/todesfuge.mp3 One final comment from Holst-Warhaft: "To many of its readers, it seemed to contradict Adorno's famous dictum about the impossibility of writing poetry after Auschwitz." This is, unfortunately, both a misrepresentation of what Adorno said, and an indication of (a common) misunderstanding of Adorno's 'position'. A more accurate representation of Adorno's famous (oft-misquoted) statement is 'to write poetry after Auschwitz is barbaric'. In fact, with direct reference to Celan's 'Todesfuge' Adorno later made the statement that perhaps poetry after Auschwitz was *not* impossible. The philosophical and meta-philosophical issues concerning Adorno's statements are intricate and involved: it is not surprising that he is misquoted and misunderstood. I hope to find time at a later date to go into them on this list.
