[Linuxtrent] Ubuntu MID e consumi ridotti

Phoronix ha effettuato un'interessante test[1] sui consumi della
versione MID con architettura LPIA (Low Power Intel Arch.) di ubuntu,
quella utilizzata dai netbook Dell come l'NC10, per intenderci.
A fronte della scelta limitata di pacchetti (che comunque non è
insormontabile, i normali pacchetti binari di ubuntu possono
essere convertiti e installati senza ricompilazione), i vantaggi
sembrano consistenti:
"If simply comparing the averages, the i386 Ubuntu Netbook Remix
consumed 11% more power than the LPIA-based Ubuntu MID. T
he most power used by Ubuntu MID during our testing was 12798
Milliwatts, compared to Ubuntu Netbook Remix at 14448 Milliwatts,
which there is nearly a 13% difference"
e la differenza è ottenuta principalmente differenziando i flag di
compilazione:
"The greater power efficiency on the Mobile Internet Device edition of
Ubuntu can be attributed to the compile-time
optimizations found with the LPIA architecture as well as the
different set of packages that are loaded by default
compared to Ubuntu Netbook Remix. "
Il tutto pare sia frutto delle ricerche condotte in Dell dal gruppo
che si occupa di Ubuntu,
capitanato da Mario Limonciello (sic!) [2]:
La stessa persona è anche mantainer in ubuntu di DKMS e uno dei
creatori di Mythbuntu
