Kia ora koutou

I was very excited to see that Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) was released on time on Oct 18. However both my attempts to update Zen (my PC here at Oblong) from Feisty Fawn to Gutsy resulted in disaster.

First I tried updating using the 'update manager' tool. I struggled with some 'checksum fail' issues while downloading updates but Andrew managed to hack his way around them. The upgrade completed but resulted in a system that wouldn't boot. I then tried to do a fresh install from a LiveCD burned from the .iso (the 'alternative' text installer version) I downloaded. It couldn't even establish a root partition and when I checked the CD for defects it failed the checksum.

I'm currently downloading the .iso for Xubuntu 7.10. Hopefully this will be a happier journey. However 7.10 is one of the more experimental releases, so we may be waiting 6 months for the next stable release before we can do any upgrades or new installs of Ubuntu at Oblong.

This Saturday there is a protest march starting at Midland Park (Lambton Quay) at 12 midday, in defence of our civil rights and the 17 activists arrested and many others hassled over the past 2 weeks. I will be going along and I encourage others to do the same and spread the word amongst family, friends and colleagues. For more info check out:

Oddly appropriate that this Saturday is also the launch seminar for the Aotearoa versions of the CreativeCommons licenses, which starts at the National Library at 9am and carried on until 6pm:

I will be at the launch all day, other than the 2 hours or so I will be at the protest, so I won't be at Linux Play this week. However, Till said he will definitely be Playing and I hear rumours that Banjo might make an appearance too ;) I might pop by Oblong afterwards on my way to the fundraising gig at Happy (also in support of the imprisoned activists) which starts at 9pm. Featuring Upper Hutt Posse, Mr Sterile Assembly and more. $10 or koha entry.
