With all the hardware troubles we've been having at Oblong and my own struggles with Buster at home, I think it would be good to look at open source hardware checking tools tommorrow. I did a quick web search and came up with an article called 'Hardware diagnostics with open source tools':

I've also been thinking about finding an open source replacement for my trusty Windows 98 boot floppy (other than installing Windows, I mainly use this for fdisk and delpart). I found this Linux distro which is designed to work off a floppy disk:
