I am really excited that the CreativeCommons Aotearoa/ NZ project has
reached the milestone of launching usable CC licenses. The process of
translating the CreativeCommons licenses for compatibility with NZ
copyright law has been completed and I'm thrilled that there is huge
support among librarians, public servants and many media people for
the idea of formalizing the free sharing of various kinds of content
using CC licenses.
Even if you can't get to the launch seminar at the National Library in
Whanganui-a-Tara, please take the time to familiarize yourself with
the innovative CC framework, give some thought to how you could use
it, and spread the word widely. For those you are able to attend, I
have included information about the event below. Please register as
soon as possible, as the final shape of the discussions and workshops
will be very much determined by who we expect to attend.

Digital technologies are connecting people in ways that were never
before possible but that brings challenges around copyright. It also
adds new meaning to concepts such as the Information Commons and the
value to society of unencumbered access to all information. The
Creative Commons licences are a modern approach to balancing the
rights of the creator and public access. They “allow” users to share,
reuse and remix legally.
The Creative Commons Seminar on Saturday 27 October (full day held at
the National Library, Wellington) is your opportunity to gain a
greater understanding of the Creative Commons approach to copyright
licensing.
If you’re in the creative, cultural, scientific or educational space,
are interested in securing a return on your creative investment and
marking your work with the freedoms and access you want it to carry,
then this seminar is for you. It’s also for people who have an
interest or involvement in copyright and the direction the new open
content licensing is taking.
The free programme includes guest speaker Dr Anne Fitzgerald,
Brisbane-based intellectual property and e-commerce lawyer and Adjunct
Professor at the School of Law, Queensland University of Technology.
As well as initiating Australia’s Going Digital series of seminars and
publications, Anne has written and presented extensively on legal
aspects of e-commerce, multimedia and the Internet. The event will
also include industry & research sector workshops, led by New Zealand
experts, to discuss specific issues, uses and concerns.
