[Linux-Discussion] Re: Serial terminal on ttyS1

I forwarded this off to one of our local discussion groups and received
this response -

Damian,

This works for me:

# gettys for serial ports
S0:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -L 9600 ttyS0 vt102
S1:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -L 9600 ttyS1 vt102

There may be more to it than that, but I thought I'd forward this bit
first.

Does anyone know how to set up a serial terminal using getty? I'm trying
to get set up so that I can use my laptop to log into my desktop....

I am using ttyS1 on the desktop, and ttyS0 on the laptop, and nothing I
do seems to get me anything more than random characters on the line...

 # Run gettys in standard runlevels
 1:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty1
 2:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty2
 3:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty3
 4:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty4
 5:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty5
 6:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty6
 7:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty7
 8:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty8
 9:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty -h ttyS1 DT19200

And this is the relevant line from /etc/gettydefs:

 # 19200 fixed baud Dumb Terminal entry
 DT19200# B19200 CS8 CLOCAL # B19200 SANE -ISTRIP CLOCAL #@S login:
#DT19200

On the laptop, I am running tomsrtbt installed to HD, with a term
program called miterm. And I do have serial terminal support compiled
 into my kernel (desktop).

 Any advice appreciated,
