One of the big issues is determining what attributes the dot characters should.
I never could figure out why LibLouis was setting them the way it was.

Subject: [liblouis-liblouisxml] SV: Multipass back translation.
Hi David,
Yes, they (sort of) work for back-translation. However, there are three
issues:
1. Especially, the context opcode with the application of various conditions
may not work as expected for back-translation. I have not tested this
thoroughly.
2. The same multi-pass rules would hardly make sense for both forward and
backward translation. Perhaps, your forward rules may be harmless when
applied during back-translation, but I wouldn't count on it.
3. The nofor and noback modifiers don't work with multi-pass opcodes. This
is a long standing issue. The table compiler seems to put the multi-pass
rules in a special array, which is kept apart from the normal arrays of
forward and backward rules. I tried to fix this, but the code contained a
bit too much spaghetti for me to disentangle it properly.
Result: As of now, once you start to use multi-pass opcodes, you need to use
two different tables for forward and back-translation, which is already
recommended in the documentation. Actually, this might be quite a good
approach, because it might keep your tables more simple.
However, be aware that back-translation can be a real killer, especially
grade 2. It is generally designed to be performed by a human, not a machine,
so it can be much harder to implement than forward translation.

Are correct, context, and the pass opcodes only for forward translation? Is
there a similar concept for back translation?
