Hi Susan,

This article is certainly worth the read. One thing I find interesting about
UEB:
MERRY-GO-ROUND gets three capital signs, before each word.
MERRY-GO-ROUND IS FUN INDEED gets an caps phrase start and caps phrase end sign
in the appropriate places.

So in single words the (regular) dash ends 'capital mode', whereas in a
multi-word phrase it does not. This is where Dutch is different: it treats
MERRY-GO-ROUND as one word in either case.

I think some of the UEB rules, such as what to do when hyphenating words
because of paper size limitations, will be hard to automate with liblouis. The
same goes for words like 'TVOntario'. Maybe you could add a rule for the
generic pattern [A-Z]+[a-z] which marks the last uppercase letter with a
single-letter capsign, as I believe the UEB rule recommends, but that might
break other words.

Davy

Onderwerp: [liblouis-liblouisxml] Article on UEB Capitalization

After reading Michael G's recent post about the "markEmphases()" I thought it
might be interesting to consider how to manually mark a text just for UEB
capitalization, i.e. ignoring the need for any other indicators. When this
thought experiment turned out to be more difficult than I'd anticipated, I
posted an article summarizing how the problems I'd encountered and how I
decided to address them.

I hope this article will be of use to others interested in this issue. I
welcome feedback and questions.
