Also I don't quite understand the benefit of doing this. If the maintenance of the Makefile.am is becoming a problem you could use wildcards, but their use is discouraged as they only work on GNU Make (see also "Why doesn't Automake support wildcards?" http://www.gnu.org/software/autoconf/manual/automake/Wildcards.html). They argue that it is not that much work to add a file to Makefile.am.
