David and Doug,

Thanks for your helpful replies.  Yes, I am an
LHSA member (and the upcoming meeting will be
in my home town). I will definitely root through my
Viewfinder collection for the article you
refer to. 

Thanks to your guidance, I'll happily abandon my
hope of finding the elusive 14182, as well as
the scarce and pricey 2x extender for the SL,
and concentrate on finding a set of plain vanilla
rings. Does it matter whether I get the 14159 for SL
the more readily available 14139?  I gather (?)
from my little handbook of accessories that the
former contains a linkage for semi-auto preset
diaphragm operation and the latter does not --
I guess this is a limitation on versatility, but
am I correct in thinking it makes no difference
for using the 400mm Telyt mounted on the SL2?
