Hockey is, indeed, a super fast game, though Pond Hockey is a wee bit slower
than the professional game.
As for white balance, aperture and speed? Well, I shoot with auto WB, set the
aperture wide open (f3.2 at 88mm using the 50~200 f2.8-3.5 Oly zoom) and set
the exposure over-redit ot +0.3 stops, to allow for the ice. Aperture priority
chose 1/2500th and the rest, as they say is history.
I'm afraid I don't get too excited about the technical stuff. I use Dr. Ted's
KISS principle. I nearly always shoot with Aperture Priority, and let the
camera do the rest.
(WB in the Oly is very good!)

Well Hockey in my knowledge is a super fast game, plus in the open, light is
bright from snow, the sky is grey.
All this to me is a great challenge for photography, then you did it!

Well, here is what I would have tried but in Paris it's currently 10 to 13
degs above zero.

Subject: [LRflex] More Pond Hockey
I should be out, shooting the Ice Racing (those crazies who race motorcycles
across frozen lakes at -20C), but for the third weekend in a row, it has
been canceled due to poor ice.
It should be about -18 to -25C right now, but as I write (3PM, PST) it is
+4C and the snow is melting. The lakes are not safe to park your car on.
