Thanks, Mark. I did not talk to the bird, but it was clearly
semi-domesticated, living in a fishing village. The close-up was taken
at a distance of maybe 1.5 meters--there is no way any heron around
where I live would let me get this close.
The starling picture, incidentally, was taken with the 50mm Summilux. I
get my share of focusing errors with this lens on the Canon 20D, but
when it works the results are great.
The clouds on the coastal roads should be darker, you are right. I chose
to leave them as is, partly because of laziness, and partly because
these were not GeeBee clouds anyway :-)
Thanks for looking and commenting.

Really like the sharpness and color in the starling picture - and the
'I'm not afraid' attitude of the bird as he watches from the edge of the
basket.
The B&W s-curve of the road's nice too, but selection of the sky with
the magnetic lasso and the brightness/contrast mask in Photoshop would
probably make the cloud detail pop a bit more. I also like the view
through the rain-dropped window.
The immensity of the sailboat scene is striking too. All very nice!

I am behind in posting for a couple of good reasons: my sister from
Poland was visiting me for a couple of weeks, so I did not have that

period, so the editing has taken longer than usual. In any event, here
is week 32. We were driving around the northern part of the country to
show my sister something else than Amsterdam.
The main is a view from the Afsluitdijk, the outermost dike in the
North Sea. It is about 30 km long, and quite tall. It will come in
handy when the sea level rises in the next few decades.

As the clouds in the preceding shot indicate, it was a wet day, as has
been the case during most of the alleged summer this year. But that
does not stop me from taking pictures:

Here is a nice coastal road near the town of Stavoren in southern
Friesland:

A couple of days later the weather was nicer and we went to Volendam,
a touristy but nice small town north of Amsterdam. I photographed the
local wildlife, fantasizing that I was Doug Herr:

People in Friesland seem friendlier than elsewhere in Holland. Perhaps
it is just the slower pace of life in small towns. I snapped a shot of
this man riding his bicycle with a small dog. He noticed, and what did
he do? He came over to me, posed for this picture and we had a brief
chat.

In the same town we happened upon an antique car/bike meet, and I was
thrilled to see this 50cc Zündapp, which was my absolute dream machine
when I was a teenager in Denmark. A brief conversation with the owner
confirmed that it was indeed the one I craved--it was from 1977:
