The Spaniards sought gold and other riches first, converts to the Church second, as they drove north out of Mexico. They didn't find much gold, but the Anasazi and their descendants worked turquoise from mines near Los Cerrillos and Madrid, about halfway between Santa Fe and Taos, New Mexico.

Archbishop Michael Sheehan celebrated a memorial mass for Pope John Paul II at Santa Fe's St. Francis Cathedral last Thursday, April 7, and greeted parishoners on the cathedral steps afterwards. As you might expect in an artistic center like Santa Fe, elegant sculpture graces the grounds of the cathedral.

The Sisters of Loretto used the Loretto Chapel for many years. Today it's open to ther public as a privately-owned landmark.

I spent last week in Albuquerque and Santa Fe witnessing all of these activities. All images taken with Leica M7/Tri-Elmar, Canon EOS 20D and 24-70mm f/2.8L: http://tinyurl.com/64n6o

All comments welcome.

P.S. For anyone in the San Francisco Bay area, nine of my photographs appear at the Saratoga, California REI Coop in El Paseo de Saratoga on Quito Road from April 11 until May 31: www.mountain-and-desert.com/west.htm
