Well, it sure is quiet at our house, no Purple Martin chattering since mid
July.
We enjoy their presence and vocalization from March through mid July.
We have a traditional aluminum 12 compartment condo, which I improved on by
drilling extra air holes and spraying foam insulation into the "attic" space.
Even the 109 degree temps in July did not cause much mortality.
My poles are homemade telescoping poles to raise and lower. You must lower
every now and then to remove house sparrow nests.
My first pole with the new "gourd'' had 6 gourds on it, but that is way to
heavy, so I have modified to only
have 4 of the gourds on them. I have prepared a third pole to put another 4
of the gourds on next spring.
I have 4 extra gourds which I would like to find a home for and I will help
anyone who is interested in attracting Purple Martins with economical pole
apparatus.
You must have an area that has at least 150 square feet of open sky to
attract the martins.
