I spent a full day in glorious Hockley County yesterday, dodging cotton
harvesters and associated ephemera, and, though we are a bit between
seasons right now, ended up with a pretty good chunk of highlights
including 2 Greater White-fronted Geese south of Smyer,1 Snow Goose at
Brashears Park in Levelland, 1 Snow Goose along FM 2646, 6 Redheads along
FM 2646, 1 Redhead at Smyer Playa, 3 Buffleheads at Roundup Playa, 2 Scaled
Quails at Smyer Playa, 1 Ring-necked Pheasant at Smyer Playa, 1 Eared Grebe
at Smyer Playa, 54 Least Sandpipers at Smyer Playa, 2 Long-billed
Dowitchers south of Smyer, 9 Wilson's Snipes at Levelland City Park, 2
Wilson's Snipes at Roundup Playa, 1 Greater Yellowlegs along FM 2646, 1
Merlin southwest of Pep, 1 Peregrine Falcon at Roundup Playa, a
continuing *Hammond's
Flycatcher* southwest of Pep, 2 Say's Phoebes in Pep, a continuing *Blue-headed
Vireo* southwest of Pep, 1 House Wren southwest of Pep, 1 Western Bluebird
in Pep, 2 Mountain Bluebirds along FM 2646, 1 Hermit Thrush in Pep, 2 Cedar
Waxwings in Anton, 23 Cedar Waxwings in Pep, 1 Orange-crowned Warbler near
Petit, 2 Orange-crowned Warblers southeast of Pep, 1 Orange-crowned Warbler
at the West x 13th Woodlot in Levelland, 4 Chipping Sparrows in Pep, and 1
Fox Sparrow near Petit.
Cedar Waxwing and Fox Sparrow were new to my Hockley County list for the
year and I got photographs of both - YAY!
An incidental set of highlights at Maxey Park in Lubbock on the way home
included 4 Hooded Mergansers, 1 Great Egret, and 4 Snowy Egrets - I am
hoping that the egrets stay through to the CBC.
