I spent roughly nine hours in Hockley County yesterday (2 July 2016),
mostly looking for butterflies and herps (as it is a bit early in July for
birds to be kicking in).
I did, however, manage to get my eyes on quite a few nifty birds for a July
county list including 1 Canada Goose at the Smyer Playa, 2 Gadwalls at the
Sundown WTP, 2 Blue-winged Teals near Anton, 2 Blue-winged Teals at the
Roundup Playa, 4 Blue-winged Teals at the Sundown WTP, 2 Northern Shovelers
at the Sundown WTP, 2 Northern Pintails at the Roundup Playa, 1 Northern
Pintail at the Smyer Playa, 2 Northern Pintails at the Sundown WTP, 2
Green-winged Teals at the Smyer Playa, 3 Redheads at the Sundown WTP, 26
Ruddy Ducks at the Sundown WTP, 1 Scaled Quail near Anton, 8 Scaled Quails
near Pep, 1 Ring-necked Pheasant near Anton, 2 Eared Grebes at the Sundown
WTP, 14 White-faced Ibises at the Roundup Playa, 2 White-faced Ibises at
the Sundown WTP, 2 Black-necked Stilts at the Roundup Playa, 4 Black-necked
Stilts at the Smyer Playa, 12 Black-necked Stilts at the Sundown WTP, 82
American Avocets at the Roundup Playa, 1 American Avocet south of Roundup,
2 American Avocets at the Sundown WTP, 2 Yellow-billed Cuckoos at the Anton
Ponds, 1 Yellow-billed Cuckoo near Pep, 1 Yellow-billed Cuckoo near Petit,
1 Yellow-billed Cuckoo at Sundown City Park, 1 Say's Phoebe near Petit, 16
Yellow-headed Blackbirds at the Smyer Playa, 4 Yellow-headed Blackbirds at
the Sundown WTP, 1 male Bronzed Cowbird at Sundown City Park, and 2 Lesser
Goldfinches near Pep.
