I got in one last afternoon/evening of September birding in Hockley County
on Friday. I did get a picture of the one addition to the county list for
2016 (Eastern Phoebe) but Orange-crowned Warbler remains my photographic
nemesis - I can't get one to hold still long enough and this is going to be
an embarassing photographic miss for 2016 if the situation holds.
Highlights included 1 male Wood Duck at Smyer Playa, 2 Blue-winged Teals at
Smyer Playa, 1 Northern Pintail at Smyer Playa, 1 immature male Rufous
Hummingbird at South Plains College, 43 Long-billed Curlews at Smyer Playa,
3 Wilson's Snipes south of Roundup, 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk at Levelland City
Park, 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk at the West x 13th Woodlot in Levelland, 1
Cooper's Hawk at Levelland City Park, 1 Broad-winged Hawk at the West x
13th Woodlot, 1 Least Flycatcher along Ellis Road, 1 Eastern Phoebe at
Smyer Playa, 1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet at Smyer Playa, 1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet
at the West x 13th Playa, 3 Lesser Goldfinches at South Plains College, 1
Orange-crowned Warbler at Smyer Playa, 1 Nashville Warbler at Smyer Playa,
2 Wilson's Warblers at Smyer Playa, 1 Wilson's Warbler at the West x 13th
Woodlot, 1 Cassin's Sparrow along Ellis Road, 2 Chipping Sparrows at South
Plains College, 4 Clay-colored Sparrows at South Plains College, and 7
Savannah Sparrows along Ellis Road.
Not bad for the afternoon lull and evening movement.
