I ran the Post Breeding Bird Survey which runs from a point west of Post to
Post and then northeast to the Salt Fork of the Brazos River - starting in
agricultural land atop the caprock escarpment and then winding its way
through canyon country of the escarpment. I will post a full report later
but wanted to get the highlights out today.
From the route: 2 Blue-winged Teals west of Post; 2 Scaled Quails northeast
of Post; 1, 4, and 2 Scaled Quails west of Post; 18, 3, and 5 Cattle Egrets
west of Post; 2 Black-necked Stilts west of Post; 2 American Avocets west
of Post; 1 and 1 Bell's Vireos northeast of Post; 1 Bell's Vireo in Post; 6
Purple Martins in Post; 1 Purple Martin west of Post; 4 Northern
Rough-winged Swallows west of Post; 4, 2, and 2 Cave Swallows northeast of
Post; 1, 6, 10, 6, 8, and 4 Cave Swallows west of Post; 1 Verdin west of
Post; 1 Cactus Wren in Post; 1 Pyrrhuloxia in Post; 1 Pyrrhuloxia northeast
of Post; 1 female/2 male, 2 male, and 3 male Bronzed Cowbirds northeast of
Post; 1 male Bronzed Cowbird in Post.
From Garza County on the way home: 2 Cattle Egrets north of Post, 2
Black-necked Stilts north of Post, 2 American Avocets north of Post, 2
Purple Martins in Post, and 6 Cave Swallows north of Post.
From Lubbock County on the way home: 1 Cackling Goose, 1 Canada Goose, 2
Great Egrets, 11 Snowy Egrets, and 22 Cattle Egrets at Leroy Elmore Park; 2
Cattle Egrets near Posey; 1 Cattle Egret near Slaton.
