I just finished 2 hours of what I can only describe as absolutely
mind-numbing goose gazing at Whisperwood. Unfortunately, no sign of the
Brant for me either. I did have several intriguing hybrids mixed in the
mass of Cackling, Snow, Ross’ and Greater White-fronted geese. I’ll have to
look back at my pictures to see what I can come up with for those.
I did have one particularly frustrating bird that decided to evade my
camera. It looked through my scope to be a highly unlikely Barnacle x
Cackling goose hybrid, with a well defined, full white face broken by a
thin black line beginning at the corners of the bill and running up through
the eyes. It also had noticeably lighter flanks than the surrounding
cacklers, but lacking the all black breast of a Barnacle. I didn’t get any
Greater White-fronted vibes from the bird at all. However, given it’s
unfortunate decision to take off with a massive flock when I went to grab
my camera, I will have to hope this was just a pigment-challenged Cackler,
and not something more exciting (which is probably the more likely scenario
anyway, given the only records of such a hybrid are unsurprisingly from the
coasts).
