Greetings All:
I spent a couple of hours at the Canyon Lakes of Lubbock this afternoon/
prevening and dipped on everything I was after.
First I went to the riparian area below Lake Six where I dipped on
relocating (for photographic purposes) the Northern Parula that Abbie Ince
found yesterday AND the Black Phoebe that Peter Keyel found yesterday.
Then I went up and down the entire chain of lakes twice where I dipped on
the Bonaparte's Gull and Fox Sparrow found by Phillip Kite last week AND
the American White Pelican found by Justin Bosler at Lake Six this morning.
I did get a very interesting photographic addition for the year's list when
I came across a badly injured/almost deceased/on the verge of being eaten
by grackles Gopher Snake at Buddy Holly Park. I took a couple of pictures
and let the grackles have it back. This is pretty late in the year for
snake activity; just goes to show how mild things have been.
I also had some butterfly movement: Orange Sulphur, Sleepy Orange, Question
Mark, and Red Admirals.
I did have some highlights. The area below Lake Six kicked out 1 Wood
Duck, 1 Snowy Egret, 2 Winter Wrens, 1 Swamp Sparrow, and 7 Pine Siskins.
Lake Six kicked out 3 Eared Grebes.
Buddy Holly Park kicked out 2 Curve-billed Thrashers; a hard bird to find
'in town' these days.
