Hi Phil, The X5D and the X5DR have the same innards. The only few differences is that the X5D has piano keys and the X5DR is a rack module. The sounds and inner workings are exactly the same. The navigation is slightly different. The default banks are the same in both devices. It's just that there aren't any on the X5D. I myself have the X5DR. I bought it for it's organ sounds.( I already had a Casio PS20 & the piano sounds on this are very good quality IMHO ). There are two pre-set sound banks on the X5DR, one unique to the X5DR & one that is also on the X5D. The ( few ) piano sounds on the X5DR that are unique to the X5DR are, I reckon, superior to those that also are on the X5D. I have recently bought a Korg P3 Piano Module but even the piano sounds on this are not as good as the Casio PS20. I would be interested in other Korgies' opinions as to which piano sounds they consider to be the best. Note that it is, of course, possible to download sounds from the Korgy Park web site. See my question on this answered by Frank Cavalho in May 2003. I am not sure whether or not you can listen to a sample first but if you are looking for a "better" quality piano sound than what is on the X5D ( you can't get much worse ) you have nothing to lose. I doubt whether you can fine tune existing pre-set sounds but I am sure other Korgies will know.
